Startup Weekend Portland crams founders, builders, and promoters into a 54-hour entrepreneurial hotbox once again

So there you are. You’ve got a killer startup idea but you’re having a hard time finding someone to help build it. Or maybe you’ve got no ideas but you’re itching to build something. Maybe you just want to help someone realize his or her dream.

Well get those entrepreneurial juices flowing, my friend. Because it’s getting near Startup Weekend time again. That’s right. Startup Weekend Portland is being held November 12th through the 14th at NedSpace Old Town.

What’s a Startup Weekend, you ask? Well, it’s a hybrid unconference of sorts—with some formalized schedule—designed to help people with ideas collaborate with people who can help them bring those ideas to fruition. The hope is to form the makings for a viable sustainable startup within 54 hours.

Startup Weekend is an intense 54 hour event which focuses on building a web or mobile application which could form the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend. The weekend brings together people with different skillsets – primarily software developers, graphics designers and business people – to build applications and develop a commercial case around them.

What’s more, the organization just got a grant from the Kauffman Foundation to help them with their efforts to educate would be entrepreneurs.

Around here. Startup Weekend has already made a mark on the startup scene. Startup Weekend Portland’s most noteworthy alumni include Mugasha, a site for sharing, promoting, and organizing DJ sets, and CPUsage, a company focused on making use of idle computer time for enhanced processing—which also made the cut for the Bend Venture Conference, this year.

This time around, the event is being managed by Michael Coates of PUSH Business Consultants and Thubten Comerford of Social Potency. They’ll be running the show and rounding up interesting speakers to give the attendees some food for thought. All while helping folks form a bunch of companies over a weekend.

Now, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that Portland-based Mugasha—the service that helps slice and dice DJ podcasts into manageable, digestible, and shareable chunks—is one of my favorite music sites around. Always great tracks. Always streaming. And always finding ways to make themselves more relevant to their audience.

Now, Mugasha has scored an exclusive on a popular bootleg remix track from the Halo 3 soundtrack by Tritonal. And their gain is, well, your gain. Because you can download the track for free.

We’re super excited to bring you a real treat from our good friends Chad and Dave from Tritonal! They created a bootleg remix of the track “Never Forget” from the Halo 3 game soundtrack and it’s been getting incredible support from folks like Ferry Corsten and Gareth Emery. As a thank-you to their fans, they are releasing it for Free Download exclusively on Mugasha!

Startup Weekend Portland: It’s back! (March 5-7, 2010)

If there’s one thing people in Portland love to do, it’s muck with technology. Sometimes, that mucking results in something interesting. Sometimes, that something interesting has enough potential that it could become a full-fledged company. But then there’s difficult transitional period. How do you find co-founders? How do you get the idea off the ground? What is going to force you to actually make something happen?

All good questions. And you might find the answers to them at Startup Weekend Portland.

That’s right. After a little hiatus from Portland, last year—and a stop in Corvallis near the end of last year—everyone’s favorite startup starting sprint is headed back to Portland. The event will be held March 5-7 at NedSpace Old Town. Tickets are $75 each.

Hold the phone. What’s Startup Weekend, you ask?

Startup Weekend is a 54-hour startup event that provides networking, resources, and incentives for individuals and teams to go from idea to launch. Get connected with local developers, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Build community. Start companies. No talk. All action.

In other words, it’s an intensive bootcamp for helping you bring your startup idea to fruition with other like-minded folks.

What kinds of companies come out of startup weekend? Well, the most impressive alumnus of Startup Weekend Portland has to be Portland-based Mugasha, the best way to listen to electronica online. And there were a number of other Portland projects started that still may become going concerns one day.

But arguably, launching companies may be secondary to gaining the experience and making connections with peers whom you might not otherwise meet. So if you’ve got an idea, definitely show up. And if you don’t have an idea yet? Definitely show up.

Want to see your favorite DJs live? Mugasha brings live electronica to you through the magic of livestreaming

While listening to recordings of DJ sets is great, nothing beats hearing a DJ spinning a set live. But for many of us, getting out to the spots where that’s occurring—where the DJs are doing their thing—can be challenging at best. What’s not quite as challenging, however, is finding time to sit in front of a laptop.

If only there were some way to combine sitting in front of a screen with seeing a DJ live. Well get ready to be happy. Because the folks at Portland-based Mugasha are working to bring some of your favorite DJs to your favorite Web browser—live.

That’s right. You’re already used to going to Mugasha to find great electronica. Now, you can start visiting the site to see and hear that electronica as it’s being created in clubs around the world.

Thursday night, Mugasha streamed the Tritonal show from Ruby Skye in San Francisco. And tonight, they’ll be bringing you the Myon & Shane 54 set live from Washington, DC, starting at 7 PM Pacific time.

Sound interesting? Make sure to swing by the Mugasha Live area of their site tonight for the live set. And stay tuned for future concerts as Mugasha continues to step into more of a promotional role for these up and coming artists.

Startup Weekend Corvallis will start up tonight. Will you be starting a startup there?

It’s been a while. A while since we’ve had a Startup Weekend in our neck of the woods or Silicon Forest or whatever. The last time we had the chance to participate in this kind of “build a startup in a weekend” experience was about 18 months ago with Startup Portland.

But what a Startup Weekend it was. With five startups launching, including poster-child Mugasha, which continues to make a strong showing in the Portland startup scene.

This time around, the startups will be starting up a little further south. Introducing Startup Weekend Corvallis.

What’s Startup Weekend, you ask?

Startup Weekend is a weekend event in cities around the world. A highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more meet and in a short 54 hour event work on building projects out. It is very much like an unconference, where the attendees decide the outcome of the experience.

Long story short, it’s a great opportunity for entrepreneurial types to get together, throw out some ideas, and maybe, just maybe, start that next big thing. All while chugging way too much coffee and staying up ridiculous hours to get something built in under 54 hours.

It’s all taking place at Belle Vallee Cellars, just off of Highway 99W in Corvallis. Things get started around 6 PM with idea pitches getting underway closer to 8 PM.

Good luck to all of the attendees. I’m looking forward to a new crop of interesting startups to cover.

memePDX: Portland tech news for those short on time and/or attention

Anyone who has spent any time around Silicon Florist realizes that I tend to be a little longwinded. And that’s putting it lightly. Brevity? Not my strong suit. And for many, reading through my lengthy posts isn’t the preferred way of getting their tech news.

So, I’ve been thinking about ways to get you more of the news you want with less effort on your part. And a different form of media seemed to be the best way to do it. So I begged started talking to the Strange Love Live folks and after a series of tantrums and crying fits on my part discussions, they finally agreed to help.

The result? memePDX.

memePDX will be a quick (less than 30 minutes) video and audio podcast that we’ll record and run on a weekly basis. The focus will be local tech and startup stories—strange, I realize—and a smattering of larger national and international tech stories. It will be hosted by Cami Kaos of Strange Love Live and me. And it will be produced by Dr. Normal of Strange Love Live.

That’s about all we know. It may or may not have guests. It may or may not be broadcast live. It may be worth your time. It may not.

Long story short, it’s the Silicon Florist podcast, only better.

But a picture is worth a thousand words and whatnot. So here’s the first, albeit rough, episode. It would be awesome if you’d take a few minutes to watch and leave some feedback.

As you may have read in my previous gushing, Portland Startup Weekend graduate Mugasha launched this week. And what’s a great launch without a great launch party? Well, it’s a great launch. But it’s still cool to have a launch party.

And that’s just what the Mugasha folks are doing. Tonight. So if you’re a fan of electronica and you’re looking for something to do this evening, join Mugasha at Rontoms tonight to celebrate.

Come to Rontoms tomorrow night (Saturday, Aug 22nd) around 8:00ish and celebrate the launch of Mugasha with the Mugasha team, the usual PDX Tech peeps, and maybe even some new faces. If it’s nice out we can hang out on their huge back patio! We’d buy you drinks, but frankly, we don’t have any money yet! Hopefully, we can change that next time!

Portland Startup Weekend valedictorian Mugasha opens sliced and diced DJ sets to everyone

I’ve been following and listening to Portland-based Mugasha—a service that gives you access to an impressive collection of streaming electronica DJ sets sliced into manageable chunks—since its humble beginnings at Portland Startup Weekend in May 2008. (I’ve got Myon and Shane 54 going as we speak.) Since then, they’ve been covered by Scoble (although the Qik video looks like it’s gone now), got some love when they launched their private beta, and were selected for the SXSW 2009 Accelerator program. But I haven’t been able to really gush about them until now.

Today, the Mugasha team took the beta sticker off of their service and opened the site to the public—and a little blog you may have heard of, called TechCrunch, took notice.

As a recovering electronic music addict, I enjoyed testing the service a lot and the content – which includes both DJ sets and music podcasts – really is high level. Mugashan, which started as a small project at Startup Weekend in Portland, sports a very intuitive interface and a couple of nice features. For instance, you don’t need to register for the service to stream music, only if you want to express your opinion on sets or even individual tracks by ‘liking’ or commenting on them.

I wholeheartedly agree. Only I’m not recovering. And I’d be saying that even if Mugasha weren’t a Portland company. I’ve been addicted to Mugasha for quite some time and I don’t see any signs of stopping. Especially when they keep adding so many awesome sets.

I’ve written about Mugasha a number of times. Each time, I’ve provided reasons as to why I think it’s one of the Portland startups with a fighting chance to go big time. So rather than repeat myself, I’ll simply quote myself:

Unlike the bevy of Web-based music sites that simply replay existing content, Mugasha actually improves listeners’ access to DJ sets by splitting them into individual tracks. Using the service, listeners gain access to the exact same content, only now it contains track listings, artist information, the ability to jump around the set as they would like, and – if something strikes their fancy – the option to purchase a particular track.

Compared to how we’re accessing DJ sets today, it’s a leap from that linear radio format to the modern user-controlled listening experience to which we’ve all become accustomed. And it’s provided in an interface that is intuitive and aesthetically pleasing.

And my one complaint about Mugasha when I wrote that post—limited set selection—doesn’t even come into play anymore. There’s a ton of high-quality content out there, now.

But the reason I really, really like Mugasha? Did I mention they’re from Portland? Oh, well there’s more than that. You see, the guys are incredibly passionate about electronica and the DJs who create it. They want to help promote artists and their work. They want to ensure that listeners have a better understanding and appreciation for the music they’re hearing. And they’ve got some great ideas on how to generate revenue around that pursuit while ensuring that the artists get the compensation they deserve.

It’s really a win-win-win situation all around for you, the artists, and Mugasha.

What’s more, it’s just been great experience to watch the Mugasha team continue to persevere from idea to private beta to a full-fledged startup garnering international recognition. That’s just cool.

But don’t just take my word for it. Well, and Robin Wauters’ word for it. Go ahead and try Mugasha for yourself.

Strange Love Live + Conferences = Tech Love Live

Yes, yes. I know I go on and on about Strange Love Live. But c’mon. It’s a really good podcast. So good, in fact, that they’ve started taking the show on the road to conferences and events, like Cyborg Camp, BarCamp Portland, and WebVisions.

WebVisions was especially interesting thanks to an “open mic” format, where Cami Kaos spent time interviewing speakers and attendees—all day, every day. The only problem? It was one big stream.

The solution? Like Mugasha does with DJ sets, the Strange Love Live team has sliced and diced the conference stream into digestible chunks. What’s more, they’ve started a new site to house all of this ridiculously awesome content: Tech Love Live.

Just as an example, here’s an interview with David Recordon of the OpenID Foundation.

Amazing right? So good. And there’s a ton of other stuff just as good as that. Plan to take a couple of hours and spend some time combing through Tech Love Live.
